1. Volkswagen & Skoda to use their Chinese EV platform for affordable electric cars in India.

Volkswagen & Skoda are working on affordable electric cars for the Indian market. Both the companies are yet to introduce electric cars in the country and have been delaying the launch of the Volkswagen ID.4 & the Skoda Enyaq. Now there are reports that the companies will use the Made-for-China CMP 21 platform to develop a Tata Nexon EV competitor in the Rs 15-20 lakh range.

The Volkswagen Group has leveraged China’s comprehensive EV expertise and its cost-effective manufacturing base to create a new low-cost all-electric platform known as CMP 21 (China Main Platform). The flexible CMP architecture can accommodate compact SUVs leading to the possibility of electric versions of the VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the upcoming Skoda Kylaq, which can compete with compact electric SUVs from Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki & MG.

2. Logistics player ZEVO partners with EV charging company ‘EV Recharge’.

Logistics company ZEVO has joined hands with EV charging solutions company ‘EV Recharge’. This partnership also marks the launch of EV Recharge’s operations in Noida. The mobile charging units offered by EV Recharge will provide bespoke fast-charging solutions for ZEVO.

EV Recharge will provide on-location charging for ZEVO's EV fleet, significantly reducing vehicle downtime and providing more time on road for deliveries. EV Recharge's technology allows vehicles to be charged from 0-80% in just 20 minutes, compared to the standard charging time of 3-4 hours.

Initially focusing on B2B, EV Recharge aims to offer its mobile EV charging services to individual EV owners very soon.

3. Two government ministries come together for EV industry initiatives.

In a significant step related to EVs, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in cooperation with the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), have introduced proposals aimed at developing Electric Vehicle sub-systems. This joint call aims to accelerate the development of indigenous technologies in the EV sector.

The initiative targets critical areas of EV technology development including:

EV Chargers & Charging Infrastructure: Development of advanced solutions for efficient charging, compatible with both AC & DC systems.

Electric Drives & Machines: Innovations in electric motors & drive controllers.

Battery & Battery Management System (BMS): Solutions focusing on battery safety, intelligence and grid disturbances.

Telematics, Functional Safety & Security: Innovations to enhance the connectivity, safety & security of EVs.

Prototyping & Testing: Establishment of centres for testing & validation of EV sub-systems to ensure readiness for commercialization.

This call invites participation from research institutions, start-ups & industry players. Shortlisted proposals will avail financial support from MeitY, while MHI will provide standardization & testing support to ensure industry compliance. The details of the call for proposals have been made available on the MeitY website.

4. Tata Motors announces festive discounts on electric cars.

Tata Motors has announced attractive deals for its Tiago EV, Punch EV & Nexon EV as part of its ‘Festival of Cars’ offer.

Prices have been reduced by up to Rs 3 lakh for the Nexon EV and up to Rs 1.20 lakh for the Punch EV. Also, customers will get free EV charging for 6 months at any Tata Power EV charging station across the country. This festive offer is available till 31st October 2024.

5. Ola Electric & Ather announce festive discounts on electric scooters.

Ola Electric has announced the ‘Biggest Ola Season Sale’ (BOSS). The company is offering exciting deals on all its scooters. The entry-level S1 X gets Rs 12,000 flat discount. The S1 Air gets Rs 7000 flat discount. The S1 Pro gets Rs 20,000 flat discount. Apart from these cash discounts, Ola is offering additional benefits up to Rs 25,000 which includes an extended 8-year warranty (worth Rs 7000), credits for fast charging redeemable at Ola Hyperchargers (worth up to Rs 7000), discount of 5% up to Rs 5000 on select credit cards & MoveOS+ advanced features worth Rs 6000.
