1. Reports of BYD setting-up a manufacturing unit in India.
There are reports of BYD planning to set-up a manufacturing unit near Hyderabad in Telangana. A big investment of Rs 85,000 crore ($10 billion) has been earmarked for this facility. Despite being present in India for a few years, BYD does not operate a production plant in the country. At present, the company imports its electric cars from China, incurring high import duties that contribute to higher prices. This has limited BYD’s market penetration. Setting-up a manufacturing unit in India would significantly reduce costs, thereby making prices of BYD EVs more competitive.
Since the past 2 years, BYD has been exploring options to set-up a manufacturing unit in India. However, strict regulations on Chinese investments has delayed the company’s plans. In 2023, Government of India had turned down a $1 billion investment proposal from BYD and its Hyderabad-based partner Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) to set-up an EV manufacturing plant. However, with recent policy changes easing restrictions, BYD appears to be moving forward with its investment plans. If the project proceeds as planned, Telangana will secure one of the largest private sector investments in the EV sector.

5. Delhi EV Policy 2.0 to focus on improving EV charging infrastructure.
Delhi Government is set to bring its revamped EV policy. The Delhi EV Policy 2.0 will reportedly prioritize EV charging infrastructure and focus on aligning the national capital’s EV charging standards with global benchmarks, including setting-up 100 kW fast EV charging stations across the city. The Policy is expected to offer subsidies of up to Rs 30 lakh to incentivize private companies to develop these fast chargers. Delhi Government’s Transport Department has also proposed making EV charging points mandatory in all new buildings, with at least 20% of the parking area reserved for EVs.
Apart from this, there are reports of the new policy mandating the third private car purchased in every Delhi household to be an electric car.
