1. Surat gets India’s 1st solar-powered smart bus depot.
India's first solar-powered bus depot has been launched in Surat (Gujarat). Developed by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), the ‘smart’ bus depot is situated in the Althan area in the city.
Designed in collaboration with Germany-based ‘GIZ’, the bus station provides 24/7 green EV charging support through solar energy and repurposed second-life batteries. The facility is equipped with a 100 kW rooftop solar power plant and a 224 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
The solar power plant captures energy during the day, which is stored in second-life batteries and used to charge electric buses at night. This approach not only eases the pressure on the local electricity grid but also advances the use of renewable energy in public transport. The station features multiple EV chargers for electric buses, and offers free Wi-Fi, mobile phone charging ports & CCTV surveillance. According to estimates, the solar bus depot is expected to generate about 1 lakh units of electricity annually, translating to cost savings of around Rs 6.65 lakh.
2. Borosil Renewables to reallocate majority of its resources towards India.
Borosil Renewables is shifting its focus to the Indian solar glass market after its German subsidiary faced challenges from declining demand and aggressive Chinese pricing tactics. Borosil will now channel its resources towards expanding operations in India.
With India's growing solar power capacity and favorable government policies, Borosil Renewables aims to strengthen its position in solar glass manufacturing. The imposition of anti-dumping duties on solar glass imports from China & Vietnam has levelled the playing field for Indian manufacturers. Borosil plans to increase its manufacturing capacity by 60% in India.
3. Indian Oil powers its petrol pumps with solar energy.
Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, recently announced that Indian Oil has installed solar panels at around 36,000 petrol pumps across the country.
The Minister gave a statement: “Powering Indian Oil outlets primarily through solar energy not only cuts down electricity bills but also supports the national goal of building a greener, sustainable India.”
4. Tata Power achieves milestone with record rooftop solar installations.
Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power and India’s leading rooftop solar company, has achieved a major milestone in the first quarter of FY26. The company recorded 45,589 rooftop solar installations during this period, showing an impressive 416% growth compared to 8,838 installations in the same quarter of the previous financial year. With the latest achievement, the total number of rooftop solar installations by TPREL across India has reached 2,04,443.
TPREL is actively contributing to the government’s efforts to increase the adoption of solar energy under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Through its flagship campaign ‘Ghar Ghar Solar’, the company is encouraging households, businesses & industries to adopt solar energy by offering customized rooftop solar solutions suited to different needs.
5. Bengaluru Airport to get India’s 1st EV charging hub for airside operations.
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is set to develop India’s 1st dedicated EV charging hub for airside operations. The new charging facility is expected to be ready within 75 days, likely by the end of September 2025. The new facility will allow electric buses (used to transport passengers) to be charged between the terminal & the aircraft thereby helping it significantly reduce carbon emissions in the process.
Ten 240 kW ultra-fast DC chargers will be installed in the EV charging hub.
