You can charge an electric scooter three ways: with the portable charger that comes with it plugged into a 15A socket, with a dedicated smart charging socket at home or in your society, or with a DC fast charger. The portable charger takes a few hours for a full charge. A DC fast charger can add a day’s riding in about 15 minutes.

Most scooter owners never think about their electric scooter charger until something goes wrong. The socket in the parking area trips. The extension cord gets warm. Or you get home at 9 pm with 12% battery and an early start tomorrow.

The charger that came in the box works. But it isn’t your only option, and depending on how you ride and where you park, it may not be the best one.

What charger comes with your electric scooter?

Almost every electric scooter sold in India comes with a portable charger. It’s a power brick with a cable: one end plugs into a regular 15A socket, the other into your scooter or its removable battery.

That’s fine for overnight charging at home if you have:

  • A 15A socket near where you park
  • Wiring and earthing in good condition
  • Enough hours between rides for a full charge

The trouble starts in shared parking. A 15A socket in a basement was never designed for a scooter drawing power every night, sometimes through an extension board. If you’re in an apartment, read the section on charging in societies below.

How long does an electric scooter take to charge?

Charging time depends on two things: your battery size in kWh and the charger’s power in kW. Divide the first by the second and add about 10% for losses.

For a scooter with a 3 kWh battery charging from near empty:

  • With a 0.75 kW portable charger: around 4 to 5 hours
  • With a 3 kW DC fast charger: around 1 hour
  • With a higher-power DC charger: faster, up to what your scooter accepts

Two things change this in real life:

  • You rarely charge from empty. A 30 km daily commute uses a fraction of the battery, so most top-ups take much less time.
  • Charging slows near full. Most batteries charge quickly up to about 80%, then slow down to protect the cells. That’s why fast charging claims usually quote “0 to 80%”.

Your scooter’s manual lists the exact battery size and the charging time with the supplied charger. Check it before you compare options.

Can you use any charger for your electric scooter?

No, and this is where most confusion starts. Unlike cars, which in India mostly use the Type 2 connector for AC and CCS2 for DC, scooters use a mix of connectors. Some brands use their own design.

Before you buy any electric scooter charger, check:

  • The connector: does the charger’s plug fit your scooter’s charging port?
  • The voltage: scooter batteries run at different voltages, and the charger must match
  • Brand support: some scooter makers only allow their own chargers or approved partners

If your scooter has a fixed battery and a standard connector, a compatible third-party charger can work well. If it has a removable battery, you’ll usually charge the battery with the supplied charger, off the scooter. For one brand’s setup in detail, see how Ola electric scooters charge.

What is a DC fast charger for electric scooters?

A DC fast charger converts AC power from the grid into DC before it reaches the scooter, so it can deliver much more power than the portable charger. For 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers, this is called LEVDC (light electric vehicle DC) charging.

The difference in practice is time. A portable charger is an overnight job. A DC fast charger turns charging into a stop: plug in while you have tea, and ride off with most of a day’s range.

DC fast chargers for scooters make the most sense for:

  • Delivery riders and fleets, where every hour off the road costs money
  • Charging hubs at petrol pumps, markets and malls
  • Societies and offices where many riders share a few chargers
  • Riders who cover long distances daily and can’t wait hours to top up

For a regular 20 to 30 km commute, a DC fast charger at home is more than you need. A safe charging socket does the job.

How do you charge an electric scooter in an apartment?

This is the question we hear most from scooter owners. Basements and parking lots in most societies have very few sockets, and the ones that exist often aren’t on a circuit meant for daily charging loads.

Here’s what works:

  • A dedicated EV charging socket at your parking spot, wired from your own meter or the society’s common supply with proper earthing. Smart sockets add safety checks and track each user’s consumption, so billing between residents stays fair.
  • Society-wide charging points managed by the RWA, where residents authenticate by QR code or RFID and pay for what they use.
  • A shared DC fast charger if many residents ride scooters and the society wants quick turnarounds.

Whatever you choose, get RWA approval first and have an electrician check the wiring. For a society-wide setup, see EV charging for housing societies.

Is it safe to charge an electric scooter overnight?

Yes, if the setup is right. Modern scooters have a battery management system that stops charging when the battery is full. The risk usually comes from the electrical setup around the scooter, not the scooter itself.

Make overnight charging safer by:

  • Using a socket with proper earthing, never an extension board
  • Charging in a ventilated spot, away from stairways and exits
  • Using only the supplied charger or a compatible certified one
  • Stopping and getting the scooter checked if the charger, cable or battery gets unusually hot

A smart charging socket can refuse to start without proper earthing and cut power during voltage spikes. That’s the kind of protection a basic 15A socket doesn’t have.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to charge an electric scooter?

With the portable charger it comes with, most scooters take a few hours from near empty. Check your manual for the exact time. A DC fast charger can add a day’s riding in about 15 minutes and reach 80% in about an hour, depending on the scooter.

Can I charge my electric scooter from a normal home socket?

Yes, with the supplied portable charger plugged into a 15A socket with proper earthing. Avoid extension boards, and have an electrician check the socket if you’ll charge daily.

Does DC fast charging damage a scooter battery?

Fast charging within the limits your scooter supports is designed into the battery management system. Charging slows near full to protect the cells. For daily use, many riders mix overnight charging at home with fast charging when they need a quick top-up.

Can I use a car charger for my electric scooter?

Usually not directly. Car AC chargers use the Type 2 connector, which most scooters don’t have. Some smart charging sockets support 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and 4-wheelers through a standard socket, which you can use with your scooter’s portable charger.

Which connector does my electric scooter use?

It depends on the brand and model. Check your scooter’s charging port and manual, or ask your dealer, before buying any third-party charger.
