2. Greater Noida to get 15 new EV charging stations.
The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) is all-set to install 15 new fast EV charging stations. GNIDA has already identified sites for the stations and plans to outsource the installation & management of the stations to a private company on a 10 year agreement. The private company will be required to share a portion of its revenue with GNIDA. The authority is currently in the process of deciding tariffs to maintain affordability for EV users while encouraging wider EV adoption.
A GNIDA spokesperson informed that each EV charging station will feature multiple charging guns, to allow simultaneous charging of multiple EVs (including DC fast charging). Online payment options will be provided to enhance user convenience. Proposed locations for the charging stations include Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Delta 1, Jagat Farm market, Noida Expressway, Government Institute of Medical Sciences, NIET campus in Knowledge Park 2, SVSP Sports Complex, India Expo Mart, Ansal Plaza and UP RERA Office.
3. Imphal Airport in Manipur to get an EV charging station.
The Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal (Manipur) is set to install its 1st EV charging station. The station will come up in the airport’s car parking area, ensuring easy access for passengers & visitors. The installation will start this month.
4. Odisha to get 100 new EV charging stations.
The state government of Odisha has announced setting-up of EV charging stations at 100 places in the state. The state’s Commerce and Transport Ministry stated that out of the 100, 21 charging stations will come up in the capital city Bhubaneswar, 38 will come up in various RTO offices in the state, 23 in truck depots and 18 at other sites. Installation work at some of the sites has already commenced. The state government has selected a private company (through a tendering process) to install these charging stations.
5. Government planning to slash import duty on EVs from 110% to 15%.
According to multiple news reports, the central government is working on the final guidelines for a new EV scheme which is expected to allow foreign EV companies (like Tesla) to test the Indian market before committing to local production. The government is reportedly planning a significant reduction in import duties on EVs, potentially slashing them from the present 110% to just 15%.
This move is expected to have a huge impact on India’s EV market and the domestic players. An auto expert gave an example of the Tesla Model 3, which under current conditions (110% duty) would cost around Rs 50 lakh, but under new rules (15% duty) would cost just Rs 28 lakh! If this change takes places, Tesla plans to import its electric cars from its Berlin Gigafactory, and gradually increase local procurement. There are reports that Tesla has shortlisted locations for showrooms in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai and Aerocity in Delhi.
While the new EV policy is expected to benefit Tesla a lot, industry experts are pointing towards the potential opportunity for China’s BYD.
