Tata Nexon EV Charging Time: How Long Does It Take?

The Tata Nexon EV supports different charging methods, including standard home charging, AC wall-mounted chargers and DC fast charging.

For everyday use, an AC charger for an electric vehicle is generally the most practical choice. DC fast charging is particularly useful when travelling longer distances or when a quick top-up is needed.

Charging Time

With a 30.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, the Tata Nexon EV can go an astonishing 312 kilometers on a single charge. You have a variety of alternatives for charging the vehicle:

Home Charging

You may install a dedicated home charger from Tata Motors at your house. Compared to a regular plug point, this home charger offers quicker charging; a full charge generally takes 6 to 8 hours. To charge the Tata Nexon EV, use a regular 15A outlet. This procedure normally requires 8 to 9 hours to completely charge the car. The most practical method to charge your Tata Nexon EV is at home. You may quickly charge your automobile whenever you want by installing specialized home charging equipment. For owners of Tata Nexon EVs, Tata Power offers a dependable home charging option. Depending on your location and the charging unit type you choose, the cost of installation may change.

Public Charging

In India, there are several public charging stations that are compatible with the Tata Nexon EV. Depending on the individual charging station and service provider you select, the charging time and cost may change. For the Tata Nexon EV, Tata Motors has forged alliances with several service providers to provide comprehensive access to public charging options. In many places around India, including malls, hotels, airports, and public parking lots, you may find these practical charging stations. You can use the specific Tata Motors app or go to the website of the relevant service provider to find a local public charging station. Please be aware that depending on the region and service provider you select, the price and charging time may vary.

Fast Charging

The Tata Nexon EV has the ability to use fast charging if you have access to a DC fast charger. You can charge the car up to 80% with a fast charger in about 60 minutes. When you're on the go, you can charge your Tata Nexon EV easily using fast charging. The car can obtain an 80% charge in under 60 minutes when using a DC fast charger. These quick chargers, sometimes referred to as AC fast chargers, can be installed at home as well as at designated public charging stations. It's critical to remember that frequent usage of rapid chargers may shorten your vehicle's battery life overall.

How to Charge Your Tata Nexon EV at Home

Home charging is one of the most convenient ways to charge a Tata Nexon EV.

Instead of visiting a public charging station, you can connect your vehicle to a compatible home charger and allow it to charge while you're parked.

There are two common options for home charging.

1. Charging with a Standard 15A Socket

The Tata Nexon EV supports charging through a standard 15A socket using compatible portable charging equipment.

This method is suitable for occasional charging or situations where a dedicated EV charger is unavailable.

However, charging is considerably slower than using a higher-powered AC wall box.

For the 45 kWh Nexon EV, Tata specifies approximately 17 hours and 36 minutes for charging from 10% to 100% using a standard AC charging arrangement.

Before using a household socket, ensure that the electrical installation, wiring, earthing and protective devices are suitable for sustained EV charging.

2. Charging with a 7.4 kW AC Charger

A 7.4 kW AC charger is a practical option for electric car owners who want faster home charging.

Unlike a standard portable charger, a dedicated wall-mounted AC charger is designed for regular EV charging.

A typical single-phase 7.4 kW charger operates at approximately 230 V and 32 A.

For a compatible Tata Nexon EV, it can provide charging performance comparable to Tata's specified 7.2 kW AC wall box.

However, the vehicle's onboard charger determines how much AC power it can actually accept.

For example, if your Nexon EV supports AC charging at approximately 7.2 kW, connecting it to a 7.4 kW charger will not automatically increase charging power beyond the vehicle's limit.

This is an important distinction when selecting a home EV charger.

Can You Use a 7.4 kW Charger for Tata Nexon EV?

Yes, a 7.4 kW AC charger can be suitable for a Tata Nexon EV, provided its connector, electrical specifications and charging protocol are compatible with the vehicle.

The Tata Nexon EV uses Type 2 connectivity for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging.

A compatible 7.4 kW Type 2 AC charger can be used for home, workplace or destination charging.

Before installation, check:

  • The AC charging capacity supported by your Nexon EV variant.
  • Type 2 connector compatibility.
  • Available electrical supply and sanctioned load.
  • Proper earthing and electrical protection.
  • Installation requirements at your home or parking location.
  • Charger safety features and technical specifications.

A 7.4 kW charger does not guarantee 7.4 kW charging speed. Actual charging power depends on the vehicle's onboard charger and electrical conditions.
