Every EV charger does the same basic job: it moves electricity from your wall into your car's battery, safely. So why do some chargers come with an app, connectivity and a spec sheet full of network options, while others are a box with a cable?

The short answer: a smart EV charger does not charge your car any faster. What it changes is how much you know, how much you control, and who else can use your charger. Whether that is worth it depends on where you park, how you pay for electricity and whether anyone else shares your parking space.

This guide breaks down what a smart charger actually does, where the app earns its place, and where it adds little.

What a regular EV charger does

A regular (sometimes called "basic" or "dumb") charger is a plug and charge device. You connect the car, it starts charging, and it stops when the battery is full or you unplug.

A good regular charger still gives you the things that matter most:

  • A dedicated, protected circuit instead of a household socket
  • Protection against overload, overvoltage and earth leakage
  • A stable charging current suited to your car

What it does not give you is information or control. You will not know how many units a session used, what it cost, when it finished, or whether someone unplugged your car while you were away.

What makes an EV charger "smart"

A smart EV charger is connected to the internet and to an app. That connection is what unlocks everything else. In practice, a smart charger adds four things:

  • Connectivity: WiFi, GSM (SIM based 4G) or Bluetooth, so the charger can talk to your phone and to a cloud platform
  • Measurement: an energy meter that records exactly how many units each session uses
  • Control: start, stop, schedule or lock charging from your phone
  • Access management: deciding who can use the charger, and billing them if needed

One myth worth clearing up: a smart charger is not faster. Charging speed depends on the charger's power rating (for example 3.3 kW or 7.4 kW) and the onboard charger inside your car. A 7.4 kW charger connected to a car that accepts only 3.3 kW AC will charge at 3.3 kW, smart or not.

The smart features that actually matter at home

Not every app feature is equally useful. These are the ones that make a real difference for Indian EV owners.

1. Scheduling and auto cut off

With a scheduling feature, you plug in when you get home and the charger starts later, at a time you set. Auto cut off ends the session on its own.

This matters more as time-of-day electricity tariffs spread. Under the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2023, time-of-day pricing is being rolled out for most consumers as smart meters are installed, though the timing and rates depend on your state's DISCOM. Where night rates are lower, scheduling shifts your charging into the cheaper window without you setting an alarm. Where your tariff is flat, scheduling is a convenience rather than a saving.

The Kazam Zip Pro 3.3 kW smart EV charger supports scheduling and auto cut off from the Kazam app.

2. Knowing exactly what charging costs you

Most EV owners guess their charging cost from the monthly electricity bill, mixed in with the AC, geyser and everything else. A smart charger with a built-in meter separates it out.

In the Kazam app, you can see for each session:

  • Charging status and session duration
  • Energy consumed
  • Estimated charging cost
  • Full charging history

This is useful for running cost comparisons against petrol, for claiming charging expenses if your car is a company vehicle, and for settling up fairly if you share a meter with family or a landlord.

3. Security in shared parking

In an independent house with a private garage, nobody else is touching your charger. In an apartment basement or open society parking, that is not guaranteed.

Smart chargers help here in two ways:

  • Cable lock: Zip Pro locks the cable while charging, so nobody can unplug your car while you are away
  • Authentication: charging starts only through QR code authentication in the app, so a neighbour cannot simply plug in and run up your bill

For many apartment owners, this alone justifies the smart version.

4. Remote monitoring and status at a glance

If your charger is in a basement three floors down, walking over to check whether the car is charging gets old quickly. The app shows live status on your phone. Kazam chargers also use coloured LED indicators so you can see the state on the unit itself: green for standby, blue for charging, and a distinct signal when the charger has lost network connectivity.

5. Sharing your charger and earning from it

This is the feature most people do not expect. A connected Kazam charger can be made available to other EV drivers through the Kazam EV charging app. Drivers nearby can find it, book it, pay in the app through UPI, cards or wallet, and the host gets automated payouts along with a dashboard of energy used, revenue and session trends.

If you own a bungalow on a busy road, a shop, or a society with visitor parking, an idle charger can recover part of its own cost. The earnings calculator on each Kazam product page lets you estimate this for your own electricity rate and usage.

6. Future proofing

The Kazam Zoom 7.4 kW AC electric car charger runs on 4G connectivity with OCPP compatible hardware. OCPP is the open protocol that lets chargers work with different management software, which matters if your society, builder or employer later moves your charger onto a shared management platform. A charger with no connectivity cannot be upgraded into that system. A connected one can.

When the app adds little

An honest answer helps you buy the right charger. Smart features matter least if all of these are true:

  • You live in an independent house with a private, locked garage
  • Only one EV uses the charger
  • Your electricity tariff is flat, with no cheaper night rate
  • You are not interested in sharing the charger with others

In that case, the most important things are the charger's power rating and its safety protection, not the app. That said, the cost tracking and history still help you understand your real running cost, and tariff structures in India are changing. A charger you install today will likely outlast your current tariff plan.

Housing societies: where smart stops being optional

In apartments, the smart question usually gets answered for you. Most residents' welfare associations want three things before they approve an EV charger in common parking:

  • Clear separation of electricity usage, so one resident's charging does not land on the common bill
  • Control over who can use which charger
  • A record of every session in case of a dispute

A regular charger cannot provide any of these. A connected charger with metering, authentication and session history can. If you are a resident or an RWA committee member planning chargers for the whole building, see Kazam's EV charging solutions for housing societies.

Zip Pro or Zoom: which smart charger fits you?

Both are smart, connected Kazam chargers with app monitoring and IP54 weather protection. They suit different owners.

Kazam Zip Pro (3.3 kW) is the right pick if you:

  • Own an electric scooter, bike, three wheeler or a car with a 3.3 kW onboard charger
  • Charge overnight and want scheduling and auto cut off
  • Park in shared or open parking and want the tamper-proof cable lock
  • Want flexible connectivity, with WiFi, GSM and Bluetooth all supported
  • Have a standard single phase home connection and want a lower electrical load

Kazam Zoom (7.4 kW) is the right pick if you:

  • Drive an electric car whose onboard charger accepts 7.4 kW AC, and want faster home top-ups
  • Use your car heavily on weekdays and need the battery refilled in a shorter window
  • Want a Type 2 (IEC 62196) charging gun with a cable length that can be customised to your parking spot
  • Want OCPP compatible hardware for future management by your society or employer

If you are not sure which one fits, Kazam's Solution Finder walks you through it, or the Kazam team can assess your parking and electrical setup directly.

A quick checklist before you buy

  • Check your car's AC onboard charger rating. There is no benefit in paying for more power than your car can accept.
  • Check your home's sanctioned load. A 7.4 kW charger may need a load upgrade from your DISCOM.
  • Find out whether your DISCOM offers or plans time-of-day rates. That decides whether scheduling saves money.
  • If you live in an apartment, speak to your RWA early. Metering and access control are usually their first questions.
  • Confirm who installs it. Kazam's installation team checks earthing, wiring, load capacity and voltage fluctuations before fitting the charger. Learn more about Kazam home EV charging.

Frequently asked questions

Is a smart EV charger worth it in India?

For most apartment owners, yes, because cable locking, authentication and usage tracking solve real problems in shared parking. For an independent house with a flat tariff and one car, the value comes mainly from cost tracking and future proofing rather than savings.

Does a smart EV charger charge faster than a regular one?

No. Charging speed depends on the charger's power rating and your car's onboard charger. A 3.3 kW smart charger and a 3.3 kW regular charger deliver the same power.

Do I need home WiFi for a smart EV charger?

Not necessarily. Zip Pro supports WiFi, GSM and Bluetooth, and Zoom uses built-in 4G connectivity, so basement parking with no WiFi signal is not a barrier.

Can I install a smart EV charger in my apartment parking?

Yes, with your society's approval and an assessment of the available electrical supply. Smart chargers usually make RWA approval easier because charging is metered and access controlled.

Can other people use my Kazam charger?

Only if you choose to share it. Charging starts through app authentication, and if you list your charger on the Kazam app, other drivers can book and pay for sessions while you receive the payouts.
