Welcome to Current Edge, your weekly roundup of energy sector news in India.

TL;DR

1. Week ending September 8, 2025 saw India slashed GST on renewable energy components from 12% to 5%.

2. The government will test battery storage at coal plants to balance solar integration & grid stability.

3. Inox Green expanded its Operations & Maintenance portfolio.

4. ACME Solar plans to raise Rs 3000 crore for solar, hydrogen & battery storage.

5. Avaada Electro will showcase its solar modules at an expo in the United States.

1. GST on renewable energy components slashed.

The Government of India has announced a reduction in the GST rate on solar products, wind turbine projects and energy storage solutions from 12% to 5%.

GST reduced on renewable energy components

This is expected to bring down the overall cost of renewable projects. This will benefit the rooftop solar segment, giving a boost to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana as well as the industrial sector, which is increasingly embracing decarbonization solutions to meet sustainability goals.

2. India to test battery storage systems at coal plants.

India plans to test battery storage systems at some NTPC coal power plants as a way to integrate massive solar capacity while maintaining a steady electricity supply on the grid.

The move is being planned taking into account India’s power grid landscape where thermal plants are expected to reduce output during the day as solar energy powers the grid.

The need for our current grid to maintain real-time balancing does not support the immediate starting and stopping of coal plants. Doing so is costly, wastes fuel and wears down machinery.

To find a solution to this, India is experimenting with the introduction of battery storage systems so that it can absorb excess solar power and ensure a steady supply to thermal plants by dispatching it to the grid at a later point.

Central Electricity Authority (CEA) chairman Ghanshyam Prasad stated: “We are just trying this as an experiment.” NTPC has been tasked with testing this at some plants and given funding support.

3. Inox Green signs agreements to provide O&M services for two solar projects.

Inox Green Energy Services has signed agreements to provide their services for 189.1 MWp of operational solar projects for two customers.

The first involves the development of 96.6 MWp of capacity with an independent power producer (IPP) for projects in Maharashtra. The second is with another IPP for projects with a capacity of 92.5 MWp across Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Renewable O&M services involve real-time monitoring, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance for repairs and system optimization to maximize renewable energy production and return on investment.

With these new contracts, Inox Green’s solar O&M portfolio has expanded to 1.8 GW, taking the company’s total renewable O&M portfolio to 5.3 GW. The company has strengthened its presence in this fast-growing segment, and is expected to capture a substantial share of upcoming opportunities.

4. ACME Solar to raise Rs 3000 crore to accelerate renewable growth.

ACME Solar Holdings has announced plans to raise up to Rs 3000 crore to support the company’s expansion in solar power while also facilitating its entry into other green sectors like hydrogen & energy storage.

News covering the ACME Solar update

The capital injection will give ACME the financial flexibility to participate in fresh solar auctions, acquire land, and fast-track project execution. At the same time, it will allow the company to explore other arenas critical to India’s clean energy transition. Green hydrogen and large-scale battery storage (essential for addressing renewable intermittency) are both high on ACME’s agenda.

5. Avaada Electro to exhibit solar PV modules at RE+ 2025 event in Las Vegas.

Avaada Electro, the solar PV module manufacturing arm of the Avaada Group, will showcase its portfolio of high-efficiency solar cells and modules at RE+ 2025. Specializing in N-Type TOPCon solar cells and modules, Avaada Electro currently has two manufacturing facilities, in Uttar Pradesh and in Maharashtra, which are designed for scalability.

What is N type TOPCon solar module?

Avaada Group is a diversified clean energy conglomerate with businesses across solar PV manufacturing, green hydrogen & derivatives, battery storage and pumped hydro.

Key Takeaways:

Overall, these developments highlight India’s accelerating clean energy transition, from policy support like GST cuts that make renewable projects more viable, to technological pilots integrating battery storage with coal plants, and private sector moves in O&M expansion, fundraising, and global showcasing of solar technology. Together, they signal stronger economic competitiveness for renewables, deeper integration into the power system, and expanding opportunities across the clean energy value chain.

That’s a wrap. Subscribe to Current Edge for a weekly sip of the most impactful stories in India’s energy transition.
