3. Government drafts cybersecurity rules for inverters used in rooftop solar systems.

Government has issued guidelines to protect solar power equipment from potential cyberattacks. As per a directive from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), suppliers of rooftop solar inverters will be required to connect these equipment to a national software platform hosted on servers in India that will be managed by an Indian government agency. The guidelines aim to ensure standardized, secure & interoperable data exchange for residential rooftop solar systems deployed under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme.

The open & vendor-neutral security guidelines for rooftop solar system monitoring & control through the national server, will be made available for integration testing from 1st September, 2025. This step comes in the backdrop of undocumented communication equipment found inside Chinese-made inverters recently, raising security concerns.
