There is no single best EV charger for every home in India. The best one for you is the charger that matches your car's onboard charger, fits your home's sanctioned load, and has the safety and service to run every night for years. Get those three right and the choice narrows to one or two options.
1. Start with your car, not the charger
Your car decides how fast it can charge on AC power. Every EV has an onboard charger, and its rating sets the limit. If your car's onboard charger is rated at 3.3 kW, a 7.4 kW wall charger will still charge it at 3.3 kW. You pay for speed the car can't use.
Check the onboard charger rating in your car's manual or spec sheet. Then:
• Onboard charger around 3.3 kW: a 3.3 kW charger gives you everything the car can take
• Onboard charger around 7 kW or more: a 7.4 kW charger roughly halves your charging time compared with 3.3 kW
• Electric two-wheeler or three-wheeler: a safe EV charging socket for your portable charger is usually enough
Our 7.4 kW vs 3.3 kW guide works through charging times for both.
2. Check what your home can supply
A faster charger draws more power for longer. Before you choose, find your sanctioned load on your electricity bill and add up what already runs in the evening: AC, geyser, kitchen appliances. If a 7.4 kW charger would push you over, you either upgrade your connection or choose 3.3 kW.
Our guides on sanctioned load and load management explain how to check this in ten minutes.
3. Look hard at safety
A home charger runs for hours, often unattended, often overnight. Safety is the part of the spec sheet that matters most and gets read least. Look for:
• Residual current protection that cuts power on a leakage fault
• Over voltage, under voltage, overload and surge protection, since Indian supply voltage swings
• Earth monitoring, so the charger won't run on a bad earth
• An IP54 or better enclosure if the charger is outdoors or in an open parking area
• Temperature detection to stop charging if the unit overheats
4. Decide whether you want a smart charger
A smart charger connects to an app. You can schedule charging for off-peak hours, see how much energy each session used, and stop or start charging remotely. In a housing society, app-based access and per-user billing are often what get a charger approved at all. Our smart vs regular charger guide covers when the app is worth it.
5. Check installation and service, not just hardware
The charger is only as good as its installation. Ask who installs it, whether a site survey and earthing check are included, and what happens when something stops working. A one-year warranty is standard; what matters is how fast someone shows up.
Which Kazam charger is best for your home?
Kazam makes three home chargers. Each is the best choice for a different home.
Kazam Zip Mini: best for two-wheelers, three-wheelers and overnight car charging on a portable charger
• Smart EV charging socket, rated 3.3 kW, 16A or combined 6A and 16A
• Won't charge without proper earthing; earth fault, voltage and surge protection built in
• QR code or RFID access
• ARAI and NABL certified
Kazam Zip Pro: best for cars with a 3.3 kW onboard charger, or homes with limited load
• 3.3 kW smart charger on single-phase 240 V supply
• App control over Wi-Fi, GSM or Bluetooth, with scheduling, auto cut-off and session history
• 30 mA residual current protection, overload, over voltage and surge protection, temperature detection
• IP54 enclosure and a cable lock while charging
Kazam Zoom: best for cars with a 7 kW or larger onboard charger
• 7.4 kW single-phase AC charger with a Type 2 connector
• Cable length customisable from 3 m to 5 m; wall or pole mounting
• OCPP-compatible, 4G connected
• 10 layers of safety and an IP54 enclosure; 1-year warranty
If you are torn between the Zip Pro and the Zoom, the deciding question is your car's onboard charger. If it takes 7 kW or more and your load allows it, Zoom saves you hours every week. If not, the Zip Pro gives you the same smart features at the speed your car can use.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best EV charger for home in India?
The best home EV charger is the one that matches your car's onboard charger and your home's sanctioned load. For most cars that means a 3.3 kW or 7.4 kW AC charger from a maker that handles installation and service.
Is a 7.4 kW charger better than a 3.3 kW charger?
Only if your car can charge at 7 kW or more and your home can supply it. Otherwise the car charges at its own limit and the extra capacity goes unused.
Do I need a smart charger at home?
Not always. If you charge overnight and don't need scheduling or energy tracking, a safe EV socket works. In a housing society, app-based access and billing are often required.
What is the best charger for an electric scooter at home?
Most scooters charge through the portable charger that came with them. A dedicated EV socket such as the Kazam Zip Mini makes that charging safe on its own protected circuit.
How much does the best home EV charger cost?
The charger price depends on the model, and installation depends on cable length and any load upgrade. Kazam shares pricing after a home assessment, and our installation cost guide explains what goes into a quote.
